Breakfast in Culver

BY WENDY SHEPHERD

Breakfast couldn't be more delicious and cozy in Culver! Our most recent dining experience landed us at Cafe Max.

We stopped by to fuel up before heading out into the winter wonderland that the town of Culver and Culver Chamber created for the town’s Winterfest.

We started off being seated by the fireplace sipping our endlessly delicious coffee. The menu has so much to offer that our decisions didn't come easy. As we sat with our stomachs rumbling from smelling all the wonderful aromas that filled the restaurant, we passed time by taking in all fun Culver Military Academy memorabilia.  This seems to be the heart of the town with so much of the town's beautiful Lake Maxinkuckee and the Academy's history captured and hanging on the walls of Cafe Max. The restaurant’s owner stopped at our table to warm up our coffee and to tell us about the events taking place around town for Winterfest: sledding, ice carving, music, shopping, and lots more!

THEN we spotted food coming our way. My daughter had the Cafe's popular Sinful French toast. It looked as amazing as it tasted. It may be called sinful but tastes like heaven! Then Jax was up next! His order was a plate of mini chocolate chip pancakes with whipped cream and a side of bacon. At 8 years old, even he noticed the attention to detail the eatery offers as he was able to pour the warm syrup from its own little pot.  Next up was Maxwell. As we all know how picky 4 year olds can be, and being close enough to lunch time, the chef didn't mind making him a hamburger and fries for one happy 4 year old. Lastly, there was my plate, the Haystack! If you are ever in the mood for a breakfast (or lunch) knife/fork sandwich, this is the one. Between grilled texas toast are slices of prime rib, blackened hashbrowns, grilled onions and peppers with a creamy horseradish sauce, making this the sandwich one that you will be telling everyone you know and the people you don't.

Culver may be a small town, but it absolutely has a one of a kind feel—and Cafe Max is a breakfast/brunch must!
